‘There are at least two reasons that justify the revised edition of a book, and especially a book on theology. The first is if the author's theological theses have become so widely accepted that it is indispensable to communicate them to everyone. The second is the need to go on defending and illustrating an idea which, despite having met with success in certain circles, requires further propagation in order to reach a greater number. In my opinion, the necessary revision of this book by Henri Bourgeois sits half-way between these two reasons...' In its first edition, the book was structured in four parts: a highlighting of the specificity of catechumenal practice and an exposition of the Christian faith as specifically interpreted for catechumens a study of the concept of initiation from both the point of view of its history and its anthropological dimension. There is also an investigation of the catechumenal procedure of those who have already been baptised. This new edition constitutes a very precise study of the great catechumenical tradition as inscribed in the tradition of the Church itself. In it, the place of the Word of God is underlined emphatically and enjoyably. It concludes with a look at ‘catechumenal practice' in dialogue with contemporary philosophy and sociology. This book provides the best synthesis of the catechumenical experience as a genuine ‘traditional experience', a privileged access into the ecclesial community or to the renewal of the life of the Church.
