In all of German poetry, Heine's Poèmes tardifs" (latest poems), "Poèmes de 1853-1854" and posthumous poems are perhaps the most exacerbated expression of revolt in the face of death. But we may also observe the spectacular renaissance of the fable, applied to a hopeless political situation: the aftermath of the wave of enthusiasm of 1848. We find a carnivalesque approach to German politics in the sketches of burlesque epics. We listen to the first apologies for the new music with surprising dissonances. We encounter the last recollections of the crises of youth. We read the narrative of a final poetic love for the ‘lotus flower', and accompany the poet in the last months of his life."
