Sometimes he has been likened to an Middle Eastern version of Ray Charles. Not just because he was blind, but because he also had a voice that stirred hearts. Rabbi David Bouzaglo (1903-1975) was and continues to be a model and a reference for all Moroccan Jews, whether settled in France, Quebec, Israel or Morocco. A poet, rabbi and cantor, for decades he directed the traditional ceremony known as the bakkachot" (supplications) in the course of which Eastern Jews, especially those of the Cherifian Empire, rise before dawn to sing religious texts and poems in their synagogues, to airs of Andalusian music. This book is dedicated to that ancient tradition, and to Rabbi David Bouzaglo, who elevated it to a high status. For two years, the author researched the itinerary of this master's life, interviewing those who knew him or who were his companions or disciples."
