To give an account of Sufism or Islamic mysticism is an almost impossible task. Yet for her students at Harvard, Annemarie Schimmel assembled notes, from literary documents as well as her friends' experiences in the Islamic Far East, that constitute the foundation of her lectures on Sufism. The principal features of Sufism are represented from a historical and a phenomenological point of view. Although she draws widely from the Eastern and Western literature, published or in manuscript form, so vast that it is impossible to give a detailed breakdown, the author nevertheless succeeds in addressing non-specialist readers without overwhelming them.
