Fondée par le dominicain Joseph Lebret pour promouvoir une économie au service de l'homme, dans une adaptation continue au contexte social, la célèbre association Économie et Humanisme a conservé une vitalité qui étonne nombre d'observateurs de la société et du monde économique. Hugues Puel, entré chez les Dominicains en 1957, s'est engagé dans le mouvement du vivant de Lebret. C'est comme acteur de cette aventure, et non comme historien, qu'il fait le récit des origines culturelles et religieuses, de la naissance et du développement de ce mouvement lié à l'évolution de l'Église catholique en France et aux engagements des Dominicains français. Il montre comment, à travers les évolutions contradictoires de la modernité, ce mouvement s'est situé culturellement et spirituellement. Plus vivant que jamais, le mouvement développe aujourd'hui ses recherches sur les questions suivantes : la pauvreté, l'habitat, l'aménagement des villes, les politiques locales, la solidarité internationale. Il réfléchit, dans le contexte de la mondialisation, aux voies et aux moyens d'un développement humain et durable. Fidèle à une histoire marquée par la publication périodique de manifestes (« Face au chaos », 1942 « L'Ambition planétaire d'une civilisation solidaire », 1959 « Pour un nouvel ordre mondial », 1976), il met en chantier aujourd'hui l'élaboration d'un nouveau manifeste : « Redéfinir le développement ? » Très vivant et pédagogique - avec interludes et encadrés -, l'ouvrage permet de faire un parcours passionnant à travers les grandes questions économiques et sociales qui se sont posées au cours de ces soixante dernières années et qui se posent à nous aujourd'hui.

Founded by the Dominican, Joseph Lebret, to promote a type of economy beneficial to mankind and capable of constant adaptation to the social context, the famous association ‘Économie et Humanisme' has maintained a level of vitality that astonishes many observers in society and the world of finance. Hugues Puel, who joined the Dominicans in 1957, became involved in the movement during Lebret's lifetime.
