In spite of the historical distance, the spirituality of Mechthild of Magdebourg is still pertinent today. In "Das fliessende Licht der Gottheit", a work of great poetic beauty, she describes a mystic path that supposes the absence of God. To follow God in a state of deprivation, even "under the tail of Lucifer", plunges the human soul into the deepest existential abyss, far from all the spiritual joy normally associated with mysticism. It is in that very distance that she finds the accomplishment of the union with the divine lover whose embrace she describes within the codes of courtly lyricism. Referring to excerpts of Mechthild's text, this book gives a succinct account of her spiritual path, revealing its originality.
