This work is an invitation to discover the valuable and important role abbeys and monasteries have played in the formation of Europe. Since the Middle Ages, monks, nuns, regular and mendicant canons have been exercising their varied activities, notably in the realm of culture, so laying the foundations of contemporary European civilisation. Their different contributions in this domain highlight the exemplary work of abbeys and monasteries in the development and structuring of the land, the management of natural resources, the creation of fine works of art, the cultural education of the people and the organisation of social and economic life.
