Saint Maxime le Confesseur (580-662) today appears as one of the greatest Byzantine theologians, whose influence was considerable in the East as in the West. In his work, previous patristic attainments are grouped together and integrated into a powerful and inspired synthesis in which originality combines with Tradition to treat every aspect of Christian thought and life. The richness, the variety and the difficulty of Maxime's thoughts explain why so much specialised work has been devoted to him, but few global studies. This book fills a need by offering to a wide public a presentation that is accessible, but also as exact and complete as possible, of the life, works and thoughts of this eminent Father of the Church.
