Born in 1922 in a small village in the Sarthe, the heir of a healer grandfather and a revolutionary leader, he decided at the age of six to become a priest in order to help people see more clearly regarding the question of God's existence. At eighteen, he entered the Jesuit novitiate and discovered a book in their library. It was about Chinese art, and it decided his vocation for China. Jean Lefeuvre became a specialist in the most ancient known Chinese writing. In the first part of this book, he recounts his life in France, Peking, Shanghai and Taiwan. In the second part, his more than 50 years' experience of life in China allows him to interpret Chinese spiritual intuition in the realms of language, art, politics and religion.
