‘If I don't become a saint, I will certainly have betrayed'. I don't repudiate those lines I wrote at the age of twenty-four. But now I have more hard-earned experience of life: that of the traveller who, on a long and weary road, feels himself weakening and knows that reaching the end is not simply a question of willpower. A certain feverish desire has given way to quiet hope. Saintliness? It is no longer a problem. I think only of God's love.
