The Vatican II council - and even more resolutely the encyclical ‘Redemptoris missio' (1990) - invited Catholic theology to make a transition: to surpass the ‘theology of salvation of infidels', which concentrates on offering redemption to those who do not confess Christ and do not explicitly belong to the Church, in order to elaborate an authentic ‘theology of religions'. The aim is to determine, from the Christian point of view, the role played by ‘religions' as socio-historical institutions - in the economy of salvation. In this perspective, new questions arise. If we hold, with the scriptures and Tradition, that Jesus Christ is the unique mediator for salvation, what relations could these religions have with Christ himself? How do they participate in His unique mediation?"
