Dans le livre des Actes des apôtres, Philippe est celui qui se trouve au tournant de la mission entre Jérusalem et les autres nations (Ac 8-11 ) en convertissant les Samaritains (Ac 8, 4-25) et en baptisant un eunuque éthiopien (Ac 8, 26-40). Pourtant, alors que Pierre et Paul occupent chacun la moitié du livre des Actes, lui n'occupe qu'un chapitre (Ac 8) et deux versets au chapitre 21 (8-9). Si Pierre et Paul tiennent des discours-fleuve pour exposer la Bonne Nouvelle, Philippe ne prononce que quelques mots : « Comprends-tu ce que tu lis ? » (Ac 8, 30). À ce jour, trois monographies seulement ont été consacrées à Philippe. Reprenant l'étude — à nouveaux frais — à travers une analyse narrative, l'auteur montre comment sous les dehors d'un personnage de peu d'envergure, Luc fait de Philippe un protagoniste qui tient ensemble les deux pôles herméneutiques de Luc-Actes que sont les épisodes des disciples d'Emmaüs (Lc 24) et de la conversion de Corneille (Ac 10). Ainsi, par sa discrétion, Philippe le personnage incarne le rôle de Luc le narrateur. Il contrôle la narration tout en restant en arrière-plan. II est tout à fait indiqué pour porter le titre d'« évangéliste » : il est celui qui fait le pont entre la communauté de Paul et celle de Luc.

In the Book of Acts, Philip is the one who finds himself at the crux of the mission between Jerusalem and the other nations (Acts 8-11 ) by converting the Samaritans (Acts 8, 4-25) and baptising the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8, 26-40). Yet, while Peter and Paul each occupy half of the Book of Acts, he only gets one chapter (Acts 8) and two verses in chapter 21 (8-9). While Peter and Paul make lengthy speeches to announce the Gospel, Philip only says a few words: "Do you understand what you are reading?" (Acts 8, 30). To date, three monographs have been devoted to Philip. Resuming the study afresh with this narrative analysis, the author shows how, behind the exterior of a seemingly minor character, Luke makes Philip a protagonist who holds together two hermeneutic poles of Luke-Acts: the episodes of the disciples of Emmaus (Lk 24) and the conversion of Cornelius (Acts 10). So, through his discretion, the character Philip incarnates the role of Luke the narrator. He controls the narration while remaining in the background. He is entirely worthy of the title ‘evangelist': he forms a bridge between the community of Paul and that of Luke.
