Countering the idea that the ‘inferiority' of women is a product of Judaism and Christianity, some of them played a fundamental role in the Primitive Church. If the Church succeeded in traversing medieval scholastic decadence and the erring ways of both the Renaissance and the Reformation without foundering, it owes its survival to these women in particular. An ever creative and continuous link threads through different epochs: from Hadewych of Antwerp to Teresia Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein), counting Teresa of Avila, Thérèse of the Child Jesus and Elizabeth of the Trinity. Five feminine mystics, and five exceptional personalities, each one marking an internal renaissance greatly needed by the Church, as much today as yesterday.
