Alongside Meister Eckhart and Johannes Tauler, Blessed Henry Suso (Heinrich Seuse) († 1366) is one of the major figures of Rhenish Mysticism. Aged thirteen, he entered the Dominican convent at Constance having felt the awakening in his heart of the desire to love, but he had no idea what this desire really was, or how to direct it. In the Biblical figure of ‘Wisdom' he encountered the object his young heart yearned for. Divine Wisdom having revealed itself to him, his sole desire was to unite himself with it forever. But how was this to be done? Wisdom — the Word of God made man — showed him the sole path that leads those it has chosen to its bosom: suffering humanity in the mystery of the Passion. From that moment on, Suso ceaselessly contemplated Christ in His Passion and strove to unite himself with Him. ‘If you think you can avoid my humanity, if you think to look down on it, the higher you rise, the further you will fall. If you wish to attain your desired goal, my humanity will be the path, and my Passion the portal.' The Little Book of Eternal Wisdom, a masterpiece of affective medieval piety, was one of the most widely-read books of its time prior to the extraordinary diffusion of The Imitation of Christ, of which it was a source.
