An anonymous work, ‘Le Nuage de l'Inconnaissance' holds a special place among the great texts of Christian mysticism of the 14th century in general, and the English school in particular. Its richness of content, simplicity of tone and spiritual elevation have made the book a great favourite. Continually translated and commented for more than six centuries, ‘Le Nuage' was for many years the domain of a few specialists. Today it is highly popular with a wide and educated public, and artists the world over have paid it homage.
