Sent to preach to female prisoners condemned to hard labour, Father Lataste (1832-1869), a Dominican, was forever marked by his meeting ‘with those women who were, after all, my sisters in Adam, my sisters in Jesus-Christ.' He observed with wonder how a life ravaged by crime can undergo astonishing evolutions when it encounters God's mercy, and society's trust. His dearest wish was that those women who felt the desire should encounter no obstacle in achieving their vocation. So he founded a religious congregation, the Dominicaines de Béthanie, who even today continue to lead a contemplative life in sisterhood: those who have known prison alongside those whose path has been more peaceful. After meeting them, some American female inmates recently took the decision to follow Christ with Father Lataste, founding a secular Dominican fraternity in their prison! After the critical edition of Father Lataste's preaching in prison (‘Prêcheur de la miséricorde', Éd. du Cerf, 1992), Brother Jean-Marie Gueullette, vice-postulator for the beatification of Father Lataste, presents this exceptional life, based on the abundant documentation he assembled for the purpose. He highlights the deep spiritual evolution of a young civil servant in the tax offices, who, in the space of a few years, offered his life in all tranquillity, even unto death, in the service of those society despises.
