De la mission de conversion en Afrique noire à l'engagement dans la coopération, en passant par la rupture qu'a constituée la guerre d'Algérie, ce livre décrit l'histoire de mouvements catholiques de jeunesse confrontés à l'émergence du tiers-monde de 1920 à 1991. Il s'inscrit dans une réflexion plus vaste sur l'histoire de la colonisation et du catholicisme. Elle permet de mieux comprendre le changement de regard des mouvements catholiques dans leur diversité. Comment ont-ils pu suivre le premier commandement de Jésus-Christ, par ailleurs figure centrale de leur spiritualité, face à la domination coloniale, dont la forme était coercitive et dont le discours faisait de l'Autre un être inférieur ? Comment sont-ils passés, sans grande transition, d'une vision très coloniale à une volonté de promouvoir une certaine fraternité avec les anciens colonisés ? Il s'agit de casser l'image simpliste, l'alliance du sabre et du goupillon dans les colonies, et de rendre compte de la complexité des attitudes et des discours. Découverte du monde et de l'Autre, recomposition de la spiritualité et de la place des catholiques dans la société, toutes ces dynamiques sont au coeur de cette histoire. Le contexte général, d'une part (évolution de la société et de la vie politique en France, relations internationales) et, d'autre part, celui de l'Église catholique, en particulier le rôle des papes, sont constamment analysés lorsqu'ils ont un rapport direct avec le sujet. L'étude s'ouvre aux réactions des jeunes Africains face à la décolonisation puis, après les indépendances, à leur investissement dans la construction nationale et le développement économique et social. En quoi la transmission du pouvoir à ces élites africaines par les jeunes catholiques français a-t-elle abouti à la situation actuelle ? Enfin, ce passage rapide vers un engagement pour la promotion du développement a masqué l'histoire de la période précédente, l'a rejetée sans qu'il y ait eu un temps de retour sur soi. Le livre traite en priorité de cette évolution, entre 1956 et 1967, pour mieux comprendre ainsi l'oubli dans lequel semble être tombée l'histoire de la colonisation.

From the mission of conversion in Sub-Saharan Africa to engagement in cooperation, taking in the fracture of the Algerian war, this book describes the history of Catholic youth movements which, between 1920 and 1991, were confronted with the emergence of the Third World". Part of a vaster reflection on the history of colonization and Catholicism, it offers a better understanding of the changes of vision which took place in Catholic movements in all their diversity. How could they possibly follow the first commandment of Christ, the central figure of their spirituality, in the face of colonial domination, which employed coercive methods and considered the Other as an inferior being? How did they operate the shift - without violent transition - from a colonial vision to the desire to promote a certain fraternity with citizens of the former colonies? Breaking away from the simplistic image of the sword and the rosary in the colonies, this book describes the complexity of attitudes and ideas. The discovery of the world and the Other a restructuring of spirituality the role of Catholics in society: all these dynamic forces lie at the heart of this history. On the one hand, the general context (evolution of society and political life in France, international relations) and on the other, that of the Catholic Church (especially the role of the pope) are constantly analyzed when they are directly relevant to the subject. The author has included in his study the reactions of young Africans to decolonization, then - after independence was obtained - to their investment in national construction and economic and social development. How did the transmission of power by young French Catholics to an African élite result in today's situation? Lastly, the rapid passage towards engagement for the promotion of development has veiled the history of the previous period, rejected it before we had sufficient time to look back. This book treats that evolution, between 1956 and 1967, in priority in order to gain a better understanding of that forgetfulness into which the history of colonization appears to have fallen."
