This biography of professor Henri Marrou (1904-1977) was written by one of his disciples, using the many testimonies he had assembled on the career and the work of an exceptional man as well as his own memories. Henri Marrou was a distinguished professor at la Sorbonne and a great scholar who wrote many books and articles on the religious and intellectual culture of Late Antiquity, on the profession of historian, on music etc. A friend of Emmanuel Mounier, he contributed to the review 'Esprit'. He was a trade union member who played an important role in educational reform after 1945. In Lyon, he made a stand in the Resistance and in Paris during the Algerian war. A secular theologian, he had a great influence on the Church of his time.
