The Gospels abound with them: they are known are ‘secondary characters' and they are frequently anonymous. Matthew did not know Jairus's name and Mark was the only one who knew Bartimeaus. Why do we have no information about the widow from Nain, or the woman in the Temple, or the centurion at Capharnaum? Could it be to emphasise the thing they have in common: their encounter with Jesus? What effect did these meetings - so unique and fleeting on each occasion - have on the bodies, hearts and minds, family and social relations of these people that Matthew, Mark and Luke deemed worthy to include in their account of Jesus's ministry?
