Aujourd'hui, tous les diocèses français ont des diacres permanents : ils sont plus de 1500, mariés pour beaucoup d'entre eux et bien insérés dans la vie sociale. C'est la constitution conciliaire sur l'Église, « Lumen gentium », qui a permis la restauration de ce degré du sacrement de l'Ordre, en 1964, manifestant ainsi l'ouverture de l'Église catholique sur le monde de son temps. La jeunesse et la diversité du diaconat permanent invitent, quarante années après son rétablissement, à faire le point sur « l'expérience française ». En 2004, un colloque pluridisciplinaire s'est tenu à l'Université catholique de Lyon, faisant appel aux sciences historiques, sociales et théologiques, et donnant la parole à plusieurs acteurs de cette renaissance. Préfacé par le cardinal Philippe Barbarin, cet ouvrage, qui recueille les actes de cette rencontre, apporte une contribution significative à la réflexion sur les ministères au service de la pastorale de l'Église en France au XXIe siècle.

Today, every French diocese has a permanent deacon: they number more than 1500 and for the most part are married and well-integrated in society. It was the Church's constitutional council, ‘Lumen gentium', which granted the restoration of this degree of sacrament of the Order in 1964, thus manifesting the openness of the Catholic Church towards the world. Forty years after its establishment, the youth and diversity of the Permanent Diaconate encourage us to take stock of ‘the French experiment'. In 2004, a multi-disciplinary colloquium was held at the Catholic University of Lyon, deploying the historical, social and theological sciences and giving the floor to several of the players responsible for this rebirth. With a preface by Cardinal Philippe Barbarin, this work, which assembles the proceedings of that event, contributes enormously to thinking on those ministries serving the Church's pastoral in 21st century France.
